Sarvodaya Hospital of Greater Noida in India
Sarvodaya Hospital, located near Delhi’s National Capital Region in Uttar Pradesh and offering multispecialty healthcare, was created to improve access to care services in densely populated areas of Greater Noida and Uttar Pradesh. Working alongside Creative Designer Architects of Delhi (CDA; Delhi), Sarvodaya Healthcare transformed an existing mixed-use commercial building into an advanced healthcare facility with state-of-the-art capabilities.
Built for commercial use with shops on its lower levels and vacant offices in its upper stories, the building had a tripartite form with three blocks connected by a central node. Unfortunately, these compact but disparate blocks presented difficulties when planning medical departments efficiently.
Converting Commercial Space into a Multispecialty Hospital To transform this structure into a multispecialty hospital, the project team added 8-foot wide corridors at strategic points throughout to connect each block and ease movement for patients, doctors, and staff between areas. Interior courtyards provided natural lighting which created an inviting environment. Double and triple height spaces further helped smooth out this transition process between retained commercial areas and the newly designed hospital block.
To address this challenge, these blocks were connected by adding eight-foot wide corridors at various locations to provide smooth transitions for patients, doctors, and staff alike. These corridors are planned along interior courtyards for ample natural lighting in transition zones that enhance wayfinding as well as improve wayfinding – improving wayfinding capabilities while enriching user experiences within hospital interior spaces.
Launched in January, this seven-floored hospital boasts enhanced operational efficiency through vertical zoning. Adjacent to existing commercial and retail stores, its ground floor hosts double-height reception, waiting area and cafeteria. Above this are outpatient departments such as outpatient nephrology and gastroenterology with mother-and-child services located on its third floor; mother and baby services on its fourth; critical care surgery facilities on its fifth; inpatient units are located on floors five or above for privacy and comprehensive care services.
Patient rooms designed using evidence-based design principles incorporate large windows, natural light, city views and soothing color palettes that promote healing and well-being. Careful planning allows efficient transitions during emergencies saving precious minutes ensuring an excellent user experience.
Sarvodaya Hospital exemplifies the value of brownfield projects in healthcare. Repurposing existing infrastructure provides a sustainable and economical solution to address a lack of healthcare facilities in densely populated urban areas, while contributing to community health and well-being.
